Information About Schmoto

What you need to use schmoto

Required:
1. Internet Access
2. A personal website with FTP access. (Almost every ISP offers this for free to its users)

Optional:
1. An email account
2. An email-enabled cameraphone

While you don't actually need a cameraphone or an email account to use schmoto, having an email enable cameraphone makes schmoto very convenient. You can take a picture and share it on the internet almost instantly.

To send pictures from your cameraphone, you need a phone that's email capable.

Most providers allow you to send a picture from your cell phone via email for free (or a small service charge) with normal calling plans.

It works differently for every model/provider.  Usually, it works like this:
1. Take picture
2. Hit "Options"
3. Choose "Send via email"
4. Fill out email form.
5. Send.

Sometimes, the cell will need an email box set up in the phone's email app.  In that case, just use whatever POP3 email account you currently own.  Your ISP almost certainly provides one for you.

When a model requires that you set up a mailbox, the steps for sending a picture could get a little more complicated:
1. Take picture
2. Save picture
3. Close the picture app
4. Open email client
5. Compose email
6. Attach picture
7. Send

How Schmoto Works

You take a picture and attach it to an email.  Then, address the email to schmoto and prefix the subject line with a special code.  Schmoto checks its email account for new messages every minute.  When it finds one, it decodes the subject line to figure out who it belongs to and where to send it.  It then transforms the email into HTML and FTPs the webpages to the webserver specified in the email subject (or to a group of sites predefined by you.)

There is nothing to install. The Schmoto server does all the work.  You only need to tell it where to put the images and html.

Schmoto automatically builds RSS feeds for your schmotolog.

Advanced users can design their entire site from scratch by writing their own HTML/CSS mockup and embedding it into XSL.

Intermedia users can design their site from scratch by embedding special schmototags into their HTML/CSS mockup.

Novice users can choose from the many existing schmoto templates.

Anyone can use the schmoto member's area to make edits to their schmotolog.
